The Dumfries House Ghost

No country house is complete without its ghost

...however, our ghost has a distinguishing feature: it smells! It can be sniffed in all corners of the house and often rather unexpectedly. It can cause slight embarrassment when taking a group of people around who suddenly become aware of a certain aroma in the room and begin to step uneasily from one toe to the other.
With a history of over 250 years, Dumfries House has seen a lot of comings and goings, both eerie and mundane. However, despite being built in the Age of Enlightenment, Scotland in 1759 was still rife with blood curdling tales of bogles, ghaists and houlets, and even a disbeliever like Robert Burns was mind to say “...in my nocturnal rambles, I sometimes keep a sharp look out in suspicious places; and though nobody can be more sceptical than I am in such matters, yet it often takes an effort of philosophy to shake off these idle terrors”
And so, scoff you may, but if you’re walking the creaking stairs, or down an empty corridor, and the little voice in your head says “there’s nothing spooky going on here...it’s the middle of the day...it’s all fine...hang on a minute...what’s that noise...and what’s that AWFUL smell?”...don’t say we didn’t warn you!
Now, do we know who this ghost might be? No, and perhaps we never will, but we do know that we are more than happy to share the house with him or her!
