Built between 1754 and 1760 for the 5th Earl of Dumfries, today the house is is widely acknowledged as one of the most architecturally significant stately homes within the United Kingdom. Dumfries House is a Category A-listed Building and is thought to be the finest of the Adam brothers’ early commissions.
It became clear at a very early stage that initial plans for the building of the house were beyond the means of Lord Dumfries. Amendments to the design having been made, namely the reduction of the height from four storeys to the three, the house took almost five years to complete and the house was delivered exactly on budget.
The design of a Palladian frontage which featured nine bays was ornamented with the coats of arms for both Lord and Lady Dumfries and the main body of the house was flanked by two symmetrical pavilions. With the exception of the coat of arms on the pediment which includes the thistle motif ( reflects Dumfries’s role as a Knight of the Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s oldest chivalric order ) the building is without fuss and appears quite plain, particularly when compared to the lively rococo decorations within the house
The interior is, however, quite different being much richer and ornate, giving scope for Robert Adam’s gift for the design of decorative features. The ceilings in particular are among the finest of their kind, displaying finely modelled flowers and foliage which extend to friezes, chimneys, doorways and picture frames.
As well as designing the House, the Adam brothers were also commissioned by Lord Dumfries to design the Coach House, Washing House, two Obelisks, the Avenue Bridge and Gateway and Porter’s Lodge. All of these works were completed between 1760 and 1763.
